Hunter Sports Group is a not-for-profit sports organisation created by Nathan Tinkler and responsible for the administration and development of sporting teams and events in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley.
It owns the licence to the Newcastle Knights. The Group also sponsors or organises headline sporting events in the region including netball and rugby league test matches, premier women’s surfing competitions and international team visits like David Beckham’s L.A. Galaxy.
Nathan Tinkler established the Hunter Sports Group in 2010 because of his genuine belief in the benefits and the social dividend derived from having families involved in sports at all levels.
In March 2011, the members of the Newcastle Knights voted to accept a takeover offer from the Hunter Sports Group. In a landmark decision, 97 per cent of Knights members voted in support of the Hunter Sports Group giving the new administration a powerful mandate from the community.
The Hunter Sports Group has provided the club with unprecedented commitments to affordable ticketing, junior development, financial investment and a drive to return the club to its glory days as an NRL powerhouse.
As part of its commitment to bringing major special events to Newcastle, Hunter Sports Group brought David Beckham and the LA Galaxy exclusively to Newcastle in 2010 for a one-off fixture against the Newcastle Jets. The Hunter Sports Group also hosted a Rugby League Test between Australia and New Zealand.
In 2011 the Hunter Sports Group announced the acquisition of three netball Test Matches featuring the Australian national netball team, the Diamonds, to be held at Newcastle Entertainment Centre over the next three years.
The Group was instrumental in securing sponsors for a men’s surfing tour event held in Newcastle over the 2011/2012 summer.
From 2011 – 2016, the Group is the major sponsor of the Hunter Ports Women’s Classic, Newcastle’s premier women’s surfing event.
